Missing or incorrectly prepared documents are one of the most common reasons pilgrims face delays at check-in, at the Saudi border, or when applying for their visa in the first place. Preparing everything well in advance — and keeping both physical and digital copies — removes one of the biggest sources of last-minute stress before an Umrah journey.
This guide lists every document you should have ready, organised in the order you will typically need them: from visa application, through travel, to your stay in Saudi Arabia.
Passport Requirements
Your passport is the single most important document for the entire journey, and Saudi authorities are strict about its condition.
- Must have at least 6 months validity remaining from your date of travel
- Should have at least two blank pages for visa stamps and entry stamps
- Should not be damaged, water-stained, or have loose pages — immigration officers can refuse entry over a damaged passport
- If your passport is close to expiry, renew it well before applying for your Umrah visa, as visa applications are usually rejected for passports nearing expiration
Umrah Visa
The Umrah visa is issued electronically in most cases and is generally arranged by your travel agent as part of your package. Even so, it is worth understanding what is involved:
- Visa is typically processed through the Nusuk platform or your agent's linked visa system
- Requires a recent passport-style photograph (see requirements below)
- Requires proof of return flight booking and, in most cases, hotel booking confirmation
- Visa validity and permitted stay duration can vary, so always confirm your exact entry and exit dates with your travel agent before finalising travel plans
Passport-Size Photographs
Even where visas are processed digitally, it is wise to carry a few physical passport-size photographs with you:
- White background, taken within the last 6 months
- Standard Saudi visa photo specifications (your travel agent can confirm exact dimensions)
- Carry at least 4–6 copies — useful for the visa office, hotel check-in in some cases, or unexpected administrative needs
Meningitis Vaccination Certificate
Saudi authorities require proof of the Meningococcal Meningitis (ACWY) vaccine for all Umrah and Hajj visa applicants. A few practical points:
- The certificate must show the vaccine was administered at least 10 days before travel
- Keep both the physical certificate and a photo of it on your phone
- Requirements are set by Saudi health authorities and can be updated, so confirm current requirements with your travel agent or the nearest Saudi consulate before your trip
Hotel & Flight Booking Confirmations
Even if your travel agent is handling logistics, carry printed or digital copies of:
- Return flight e-tickets
- Hotel booking confirmations for both Makkah and Madinah
- Your complete itinerary with dates, group leader contact, and emergency numbers
These documents are frequently requested at Saudi immigration counters, even when your visa has already been approved.
Documents for Women & Mahram Requirements
Depending on age and travel circumstances, women may be asked to provide additional documentation related to mahram (a male guardian or relative) accompaniment. Requirements can vary and are periodically updated by Saudi authorities, so it is important to confirm the current rules with your travel agent well before booking, particularly if travelling without a male family member.
Medical Documents
If you are travelling with any pre-existing medical condition or carrying prescription medication:
- Carry a doctor's letter describing your condition and medication
- Keep medication in its original packaging with the prescription label visible
- For elderly pilgrims or those with chronic conditions, a brief medical fitness certificate from your doctor is a sensible precaution, even if not formally required
Emergency & Contact Information
Prepare a simple card or note (physical and saved on your phone) with:
- Your group leader's phone number and the local Pakistan embassy/consulate contact in Saudi Arabia
- A family member's contact number back home
- Your hotel names and addresses in both Makkah and Madinah
- Blood group and any known allergies, particularly important for elderly pilgrims
